Critical assessment of Sayyabellus Mohammed, 2003 (type-species S. scutulus) orbitolinid foraminifera from the Lower Cretaceous of Iraq

Document Type: Original paper (Research paper)

Abstract

Sayyabellus scutulus Mohammed, 2003, was described as an orbitolinid foraminifera from the Lower Cretaceous of Iraq. In the present critical taxonomic review, Sayyabellus is considered as being undiagnostic in terms of modern taxonomy, and most likely a mixture of different taxa. The distinct initial trochospire, and the low-conical large-sized tests displaying a central depression (sigmoseptal to annular adult chambers) instead recall the species Paleodictyoconus actinostoma ArnaudVanneau & Schroeder, 1976.
